Anti-Trump Republicans Face Major Consequences – GOP Votes Unanimously to Censure Cheney, Kinzinger

Former President Donald Trump is a lightning rod in the political world. He enjoys immense support from many Republicans and Conservatives nationwide, but not all GOP leaders back him.
For example, after the now-infamous January 6 riots in Washington, several Republicans came down hard on Trump. A few even wanted him impeached for his alleged role in the uprising.
But now, they’re realizing their are consequences for going against the Party.
GOP Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.) lambasted the former President for whipping right-wingers into a frenzy on January 6. And they participated in a Jan. 6 investigation panel as well.
This latter point is why the Republican Party is upset with these two “rogue” representatives.
After Cheney and Kinzinger’s participation in the panel, other GOP leaders floated the idea of a formal censure for both. It would send a strong message that they still stand behind the former President.
That’s exactly what happened yesterday on Capitol Hill, when the vote came in to punish the “anti-Trump” politicians.

Members of the Republican National Committee (RNC)’s resolutions committee voted unanimously Thursday in favor of a motion calling for the censure of GOP Reps. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., and Adam Kinzinger, R-Ill., for their participation in the Jan. 6 congressional investigation panel.
Now that the proposal has been approved, it will be voted on by the full RNC later today. That event will be open to reporters as well.
Both Cheney and Kinzinger, along with 8 other Republican members of the House, voted to impeach Trump for his alleged role. And unsurprisingly, neither is happy about this unanimous vote of censure.
Cheney said in a statement:
The leaders of the Republican Party have made themselves willing hostages to a man who admits he tried to overturn a presidential election and suggests he would pardon Jan. 6 defendants, some of whom have been charged with seditious conspiracy.
I’m a constitutional conservative and I do not recognize those in my party who have abandoned the Constitution to embrace Donald Trump. History will be their judge. I will never stop fighting for our constitutional republic. No matter what.
Kinzinger added that he has “no regrets” about his actions, and will focus his efforts “on standing for truth and working to fight the political matrix that’s led us to where we find ourselves today.”
However, those who back Trump clearly believe both GOP members deserve this censure punishment.
Whether or not Trump broke any laws in regards to January 6 remains a subject of heated debate. And his reaction to the outcome of the 2020 presidential election is hugely controversial as well.
But when members of his own party refuse to support his words and actions, it’s a good possibility that they’ll start pushing back.
