According to Decision Desk HQ, the field for the midterms for the gubernatorial race for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to replace Republican Charlie Baker has been decided Tuesday night.
BOSTON (AP) — Geoff Diehl, a former state representative endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has won the Republican nomination for Massachusetts governor over businessman Chris Doughty, who was considered the more moderate candidate in the race.
The victory for Diehl sets up a general election contest against Democratic Attorney General Maura Healey, who would be the first openly gay person and the first woman elected governor if she wins in November. The state’s current governor, Republican Charlie Baker, decided against seeking a third term.
…
Diehl, the favorite among state Republican Party delegates in Massachusetts, has ties to Trump stretching to 2016, when he served as co-chair for Trump’s presidential campaign in the state. Trump lost Massachusetts by almost 30 percentage points in his two presidential campaigns. Diehl has also opposed COVID-19 protocols and hailed the Supreme Court ruling overturning Roe v. Wade.
In an earlier version of the piece preceding the final tally, the AP reported that the Democrat candidate to oppose Diehl in November was already known, as state Attorney General Maura Healey ran essentially unopposed:
Democrats have a simpler decision. Attorney General Maura Healey — she would become the first woman and first openly gay candidate elected governor if she wins — is facing no challengers after the only other Democrat on the ballot dropped out of the running.
