Evidently, only upper echelon elite Democrats are above the law, not peons . . .

Last week, actor Jussie Smollett was found guilty of lying to police about a supposed hate crime. He was officially convicted for committing five Class 4 felonies, each of which carries a maximum 3-year prison sentence.
He will be appealing the conviction but in the meantime, the embattled former Empire star is now facing another serious legal issue.
This one involves the City of Chicago and its police department.
After Smollett was arrested for allegedly fabricating his “assault” story, the City announced that it would go after Smollett on behalf of the Chicago PD.
As it turns out, the police spent over $130,000 on investigating Smollett’s story. And a court of law just determined that that story was bogus, which means the City is doubling down on their move.
They’ve filed a lawsuit that seeks to recover that $130K+ from Smollett, so the police can be reimbursed.
Smollett knew this action was coming for a while but if he’d been found innocent, the lawsuit likely wouldn’t have proceeded. But as he’s now guilty of making the story up, the police want their money back.
As the City of Chicago said in a statement:
The City intends to continue to pursue its lawsuit to hold Smollett accountable for his unlawful actions and to demand that he compensate the City for costs incurred by the Chicago Police Department which took his false claims of harm seriously.
The City added that the jury’s decision justified the lawsuit, saying they were “correct in bringing the civil lawsuit” against Smollett.
The suit has been pending ever since it was first filed back in 2019. That’s when the actor refused to reimburse the Chicago Police Department for the $130,106.15 it spent on looking into Smollett’s story.
During that time, they used two dozen police officers and detectives, who racked up 1,836 overtime hours.
And the news just gets worse for Smollett: a jury could demand that he pay up to three times more than that $130K cost — they might demand that the actor fork over as much as $390,000.
For his part, Smollett and his attorneys continue their innocence claim, despite the verdict.
Smollett’s lead attorney, Nenye Uche, says the star is “100 percent confident” that the guilty verdict will be reversed on appeal. However, many in the judicial system doubt that this will happen.
In the meantime, Smollett and his team will have to deal with this lawsuit by the City, which they’re pushing hard now.
Given the guilty ruling, the City says it’s clear that they were right in filing the suit, and Chicago PD absolutely needs to be reimbursed. This just compounds Smollett’s problems, certainly.
As for the appeal, that’s forthcoming. But many legal experts say the plea faces an uphill battle.
Key Takeaways:
The City of Chicago is again pursuing its lawsuit against Jussie Smollett.
They’re demanding the actor reimburse Chicago PD for over the cost of their investigation: over $130K.
A jury could demand that Smollett pay three times that amount ($390,000). With the guilty verdict, the City believes the lawsuit was the correct move.
